From the 1850s to the 1950s, everything from flour, sugar, chicken feeds, and sausage and even voting ballots were packaged in tightly woven cotton bags known as flour sacks. In a day where everything was hard to come by, these bags were just as valuable as the goods they held. Thrifty housewives would wash and bleach the sacks, then cut and sew underwear, pillowcases, toys, dresses and what was used most, kitchen towels. Their popularity was passed down from mother to daughter.
Today, many folks are trying to get back to the traditions of old of being more self-sustaining in everything they do.
