Old Man’s Beard (a lichen) grows on a lot of the old and dying trees in our woodlotol. Whitetail deer eat it in winter and birds use it as nesting material.
We are feeding the birds again now that winter is here. This is a black capped chickadee.

Winter Seeds
Winter seeds. Juncos, goldfinches and other seed eaters will eat most of the weed seeds in the field over the winter. Leaving weeds contributes to habitat.

The visiting wood duck.
This female wood duck has been eating bird seed with the other wild birds, and she hangs out with our pet ducks. She spends time in the pond and she perches in the bare hardwood trees.
